Read MoreFasting has existed for centuries as a part of many religions and cultures. Though gaining popularity as a trend in recent years, it has many health benefits that have been studied over time. Research shows that intermittent fasting can aid everything from weight loss to disease prevention and promote better body health overall.
Intermittent fasting is a cyclical method of food intake involving set periods for eating and fasting. The common question on everyone’s mind is – how to do intermittent fasting? There are different types of intermittent fasting, like the 16/8 method, where you only eat for 8 hours in a day and fast for 16 hours, or the 5:2 method, in which you eat normally for 5 days and take small meals for 2 days. Another method involves fasting every alternate day.
Think fasting only affects your food intake? Think again. Many changes occur in your body that makes it easier for fat to be burned and for your cells to start repair processes. Fasting helps lower your insulin levels, increase your human growth hormone (HGH) levels, and removes waste from cells, helping them repair. These changes make it possible to burn fat quicker and even gain muscle.
Intermittent fasting is known to help you lose weight, but how does it do that? It works in two ways; fasting reduces the number of meals you take, which means you are eating fewer calories than usual. It also boosts your metabolism, helping your body burn more calories than usual. Research shows that intermittent fasting also helps you lose visceral fat, which is harmful abdominal fat that causes diseases.
Insulin resistance causes type 2 diabetes, which is a commonly diagnosed issue in this day and age. How does intermittent fasting help? Studies have shown it dramatically reduces insulin resistance in your body and in turn lowers your blood sugar levels greatly. This means it not only helps manage diabetes but also prevents it.
Another secret to anti-ageing? That’s right! Intermittent fasting can help you live longer by helping your body fight off inflammation, which is a cause of diseases. Fasting also increases your resistance to oxidative stress which is caused by free radicals in the body. These molecules cause damage at a cellular level and may lead to chronic diseases. By increasing your resistance to these, intermittent fasting may help you live a longer, healthier life.
Intermittent fasting helps your body remove waste at a cellular level. How? It activates a process called autophagy that helps your cells break down bad proteins. Research shows this protects you from the onset of several diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Intermittent fasting is beneficial for your entire body and that includes the brain. In addition to reducing things like inflammation, insulin resistance, blood sugar levels etc, which are good for brain health, fasting also helps the brain by promoting the growth of nerve cells and protecting against brain damage.
Fasting helps keep your heart healthy! Studies show that intermittent fasting helps lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as blood pressure. Additionally, research also shows it lowers the risk of diabetes and coronary artery disease that are big causes of heart disease.
