How To Protect Your Joints As You Age

By Kapiva Editorial

In our daily life, we don’t tend to pay a lot of heed to how to protect our joints – that is until they get injured or start aching and hinder our everyday life. But, needless to say, our joints do need a lot of care and attention as we grow as they can cause bigger issues once we’re older.

How Do You Keep Your Joints Healthy?

There are many simple yet effective steps you can take to help keep your joints healthy. You can follow the tips below –

  • Maintain a Healthy Weight

If you are on the heavier side of the scale, you are bound to put more pressure on your knees, ankles, hips, and even back. Hence, you will see a lot of younger people – who don’t invest their time on fitness – complain about back pain. According to research done in this direction, for every pound of weight you gain, you’re adding four pounds of pressure on your joints. Thus, through the maintenance of diet, regular exercising, and an overall healthy lifestyle, you can limit the amount of stress you exert on your joints.

  • Keep Moving

Staying active, as mentioned above, can solve problems more than one. Not only can it help cut the extra fat but also help introduce flexibility in your joints. You should try to move as much as you can. Avoid sitting and standing in one position for too long. Even starting with low-impact exercising can help greatly. Start your days by walking, swimming, or any other natural exercise you love! Don’t over-train or exert yourself otherwise you’ll end up causing injury to your joints.

  • Stay Strong

The stability of your joints is directly related to strong muscles and bones. Thus, adding strength training to your exercise routine can help you build muscles, all while keeping your joints safe and sound. Your exercise routine should focus on your abominable area, back, and your chest muscles. A strong core helps you maintain your balance and correct your posture.

  • Correct your posture

Coming to posture, poor posture can put a strain on your joints as well as reduce your risk of injury of muscles. Whether you sit, stand or are in the middle of motion – you need to be mindful of your posture. More so, when lifting heavy objects, you need to protect yourself from any kind of painful injuries or joint damage.

  • Don’t forget about diet

Eating healthy can improve your joint health, as well as help you lose excess weight. Eating lean proteins can directly help you build stronger muscles. You can also keep your bones healthy by introducing Calcium, and Vitamin D into your diet. This can be done through dairy products – other foods like tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables, berries, and nuts that can help with reducing inflammation.

How can joint problems be prevented?

When you exercise, you should start slow and build up to your goal. Take time to warm up before you stride and always start with gentle movements and invest your time in stretching. This helps in preventing injuries commonly caused in areas like muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons.

How to protect your knees as you age?

Your knees take a lot of pressure during your lifetime. All of your movements depend on your legs, whether it is sitting, standing or moving. As mentioned before for every time you add a pound of weight, you exert three times the pressure on your knees. Likewise, every time you climb a flight of stairs that force is multiplied by two times. And on the other hand, if you squat down, you place as much as four to five times worth of pressure on your knees. Hence, it is highly likely for you to end up overworking your knees.

In order to keep these joints healthy, and well you should focus on maintaining a healthy weight. Regular stretching and light exercising are good places to start with. Keeping yourself agile and fit is the perfect way to take care of your knees.

How to protect your knees

Some tips to help protect your knees –

  • Drink water over energy drinks or soda

The cartilage present in your body makes up about 80% of it. This is what makes your body flexible, and cushions your joints.  If you don’t drink enough water, your body will end up absorbing the hydration from your joints and spreading it to other areas, which can wreak havoc on the joints. On top of this, sodas and energy drinks do no good to your body.

  • Listen to your body

Your muscles can get sore due to regular exercising but your joints shouldn’t be in pain. Temporary joint pain might be a cause of your body not being flexible enough but on the other hand if your joint pain doesn’t go away, it is a sign of concern.

Foods that can help with Joint Pain –

  • Desi Ghee

Organic desi cow ghee is a common remedy in Ayurveda. If you add ghee to your daily diet, it helps in relieving joint pain. Thus, as people age and develop complications like arthritis, osteoporosis, etc – they are advised to inculcate ghee into their diet. On the other hand, massaging your joints with ghee can also help greatly with joint pain.

Ghee is known to be rich in Vitamin K, which enables it to be beneficial for many reasons. The medicinal quality of ghee also helps in reducing inflammation of your body.

  • Noni Juice

Noni juice has free radicals and amazing anti-inflammatory properties which makes it the perfect choice for people who are living with arthritis. Noni juice also helps relief any pain you have naturally. Freshly extracted from the Noni plant also known as the Indian Mulberry, this juice works wonders on your overall health.
