Read MoreFasting, with a fluctuating blood sugar level, can be challenging. Whether you’re suffering from Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, you should be extra careful, especially during the holy month of Ramzan. It has been found that fasting without Insulin can actually have a reverse effect. In other words, it could result in Diabetic Ketoacidosis – a condition wherein there’s a buildup of acids called ketones.
Ideally, it is advisable to keep from fasting if you’re a Diabetic. However, if it’s unavoidable, ensure that you have a proper diet consisting of foods that don’t let your blood sugar levels plunge. You can also consider trying intermittent fasting for diabetes.
Intermittent fasting can be defined as an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. It isn’t about which foods to eat, but rather when you should eat them.
Studies have found that intermittent fasting for diabetes helps stabilise blood sugar levels, increases stress resistance and suppresses inflammation. It also helps in lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
There are quite a few studies which eulogize this method of abstinence for a stipulated duration. The 16/8 Fast Method involves not eating for 16 consecutive hours each day. This technique could come in handy in the month of Ramzan. In the 8 hours that you get to eat, your diet should be plentiful in skimmed-milk, fruits and dry fruits. And yes, don’t forget to keep yourself well-hydrated at all times.
Another practice that you must integrate into your routine is the consumption of Karela Jamun Juice from Kapiva. The role of these herbs in combatting Diabetes is well known. You could also try some simple Ayurvedic hacks to keep the blood sugar under control.
Having said that, people with Type 1 Diabetes should still refrain from engaging in starving for long hours; there are numerous complications that come with it. Remember – nothing supersedes your health! Health is the ultimate wealth. Take a look at The Pros and Cons of Fasting
